*Rent Romus’ Life’s Blood ensemble performs the “Rising Colossus Suite”, an exploration of emergence in multiple movements.
Life’s Blood seeks to create new ways of expression in essence paying a tribute to that which make us what we are today. They explore the music of originality by its members, the surrounding community, and from those who have come before. It is that life’s blood that fuels inspiration, and sustains a deep ability to create in us all.

*Danny Paul Grody is a founding member of both San Francisco based bands Tarentel & The Drift. He is a self taught guitarist, and the melodies at the core of Danny’s songwriting bring to mind his love of West African kora, Takoma style fingerpicking and all things minimal, repetitive & hypnotic.

*Kathy Barwick & Pete Siegfried have delighted and enchanted audiences with a distinctive blend of bluegrass, old-time country, traditional Irish and folk into an engaging Americana fusion showcasing Pete’s exceptional lead vocals, Kathy’s amazing guitar work and sterling duet harmonies.
Their first album, The Trestle does a superb job of capturing material ranging from Gene Autry and Flatt & Scruggs to Jean Ritchie and T-Bone Burnett, with a pair of Siegfried originals (“California Bound” and “Over the Ocean”) anchoring the song list.

Amy Reed is a visual artist and composer living in Sacramento, California. She is the founder of Ma, a series that supports creative work by women at Gold Lion Arts, a performance/education space she co-creates with Ross Hammond. She studied extensively with Sarah Flohr.
In 1977 Lake co-founded the World Saxophone Quartet, with David Murray, Julius Hemphill and Hamiet Bluiett.
He is currently a member of the group, Trio 3, with Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille.

*Since settling in San Francisco in 1997, trumpeter Darren Johnston has collaborated and recorded with an extremely diverse cross-section of artists. His interests rotate around composing instrumental music, writing songs, and performing all styles of jazz, experimental and purely improvised music, as well as traditional music of the Balkans, Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, and the Arab world. These interests have coalesced into his primary ensemble of late, The Broken Shadows Family Band. He has also performed with luminaries such as Hamid Drake, Fred Frith, ROVA Sax Quartet, Rumen Shopov, Myra Melford, Ben Goldberg, Matt Wilson, and others.
*After graduating from the Berklee College of Music, Hamir Atwal moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and started working with creative musicians such as Ben Goldberg (Tin Hat Trio), Darren Johnston (Nice Guy Trio) and Patrick Wolff. Hamir's rock/jazz/improv group Glimpse Trio was founded in 2010. Their 1st CD "1985" was described by Downbeat Magazine editor Frank Alkyer as "a furious blend of rock, jazz. blues with infectious folkiness."
In addition to performing, Hamir has also has taught drum clinics at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, the Berkeley Jazzschool, and Music Academy International (Nancy, France).
Dr. Gilman has twice been an International Jazz Ambassador through the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and USIA, traveling to West Africa in 1999 and East and Southern Africa in 2000.

In 1998 Steve performed at The Glasgow International Jazz Festival in Scotland with jazz organ legend Jimmy Smith. He has performed for the 1998 and 2000 Jazz Ambassadors Program held at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.
*Buca Necak has been described as "creative" and "fluid and powerful" on the acoustic bass. Featured with Clark Terry and Chet Baker, among others, Necak is considered one of the finest jazz artists in the vibrant San Francisco music scene.

*Sacramento guitarist Ross Hammond has played on large stages and in small corners throughout the United States. His sound is equal parts jazz, folk, blues, spirituals and world music. His next release is "Flight," a solo record for acoustic 6 string, 12 string and acoustic slide guitar. Flight is available on 4/14/2015.

Erick Glick Reiman:
Performing on a variety of instruments, including the prepared/extended Rhodes electric piano, as well as piano, melodica, celeste, organ, Waterphone, and toy piano, SF Bay Area composer/improviser Eric Glick Rieman performs improvised and previously structured music in several settings, both solo and in groups, He has performed with the Mills College Contemporary Performance Ensemble in Oakland, CA, USA since 1999, and received an MFA from Mills in Electronic Music and the Recording Media in 2001. Rieman writes for piano, Rhodes electric piano, and ensembles.

She allows her painting practice and her composing practice to inform her extensive research into performance, video, sound, improvisation, and listening. Recent work includes: Solo – electric guitar, Ione’s 20th Annual Dream Festival; virtual Artists-in-Residence dream duo with ecologist Dr. Leo Polansky, large ensemble work with Phillip Greenlief, and an active duo with Ross Hammond performing original and traditional material.

Ma Series w/ Nava Dunkelman and Phillip Greenlief and Jon Raskin's 1+1 with Amy Reed
Nava Dunkelman is a Bay Area based percussionist and improviser. Born in Tokyo, Japan and raised in a multi-cultural environment by an American father and Indonesian mother, Nava’s musical interests span the globe from Japanese taiko to Indonesian gamelan to American marching band, and from classical to contemporary to the avant-garde. Nava studied percussion under Eugene Novotney at Humboldt State University before attending Mills College, where she studied withWilliam Winant, Fred Frith, Maggi Payne, Zeena Parkins, and David Bernstein. Since graduating with a degree in music performance in 2013, Nava has performed and collaborated with John Zorn, Fred Frith, Chris Brown, Dominique Leone and many others. Through improvisation, Nava enjoys discovering her own musical language by exploring experimental approaches to communication, progression, and space.

DunkelpeK is Nava Dunkelman (percussion) and Jakob Pek (guitar, miscellany, piano). This Bay Area based duo offers listeners a visceral, syncretic experience of sound and silence. Inspired and informed by many musics of the world and beyond, DunkelpeK interweaves and explores countless dimensions of vibration, giving being to a sonic reality unlike any other.

Jesse Vasquez Closing Reception
And finally, we'll be having a closing reception for photographer Jesse Vasquez, whose work we've had the privilege of looking at on the Gold Lion Walls for the past 2 months. Jesse's exhibit, called "No Place Better Than Here," focuses on patterns found in nature. All his photos are based around Sacramento. Come by his closing reception. It will be Sunday, May 31 at 3pm. There will be food and live music.

April at Gold Lion Arts
Did you play in Jazz band when you were in middle school or high school? Remember how much fun that was? Well now you can enroll in this workshop and play jazz with other musicians like you. This workshop is designed for non-professional musicians with beginning to intermediate skill levels. Each session is 90 minutes, meeting once a week for ten weeks. Participants get to play jazz with a professional rhythm section (bass and drums), study music theory, jazz improvisation techniques and play in jazz concert at the end of the term. All instruments are welcome! Even if you are a bass player or drummer, you will still get to play! Our rhythm section will be there for guidance and moral support. Our Drum Clinician is Jack Stanfill.
Since 1959, Jack has enjoyed numerous and varied experiences playing drums with piano trios, military organizations, symphonic music, Las Vegas lounge acts, big bands as well as bands that play country-western, traditional jazz, popular, swing, dance, rock and roll, free jazz, and Broadway music.
